Cyclohexanone Introduction In the 1940s, cyclohexanone industrial product uses phenol hydrogenation to generate cyclohexanol and get cyclohexanone by dehydrogenation. In the 1960s, with the development of petrochemical industry, cyclohexane oxidation method to produce cyclohexanone has dominated the industry gradually. In 1967, DSM developed phenol hydrogenation one-step preparation of cyclohexanone and achieved industrialization. This method has short process, high product quality and high production rate. But the price of phenol and catalyst is higher. The industry remains cyclohexane oxidation method. Cyclohexane oxidation method The cyclohexane oxidation generates the mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, commonly knows as KA oil. With out seperation, the KA oil is directly in catalytic dehydrogenation and the cyclohexanol is converted to cyclohexanone (see the figure). The general used catalysts in KA oil dehydrogenation include zinc oxide, zinc and calcium oxide and the mixture of carbonates, etc. Reaction temperature 360～420℃, pressure 0.1MPa, liquid space velocity 1～4h-1. Phenol hydrogenation method In industry, phenol is used as the raw material to produce cyclohexanone. Previously, we use phenol hydrogenation to generate cyclohexanol and cyclohexanol dehydrogenation to produce cyclohexanone; now DBM company has developed one step method to product cyclohexanone with phenol liquid phase hydrogenation under the effect of palladium catalyst. The one-step chemical reaction is as follows: Hydrogenation temperature 150～170℃, pressure 0.2～0.4MPa; phenol conversion rate 95%, yield 97%. Physical properties Colorless, transparent liquid, boiling point 156.7℃. Mainly (95% of the total) used in the preparation of caprolactam and adipic acid. A small amount is used as industrial solvent in rubber, coating, leather, ink, pesticide and other industries.
